Soulful noodle bowls with rich broth and endless regional styles.

What is Ramen?

Ramen is a Japanese noodle soup dish that has become iconic in Japanese cuisine. It consists of Chinese-style wheat noodles served in a broth, typically flavored with soy sauce, miso, or tonkotsu (pork bone).

Cultural Background

While ramen has Chinese origins, it has been deeply integrated into Japanese food culture since the early 20th century. Today, ramen is considered a national dish of Japan, with regional variations found throughout the country.

Each region has its own style: Tonkotsu from Fukuoka, Miso from Hokkaido, Shoyu from Tokyo, and many others.

Ramen in Anime

Ramen appears frequently in anime as a comfort food and symbol of Japanese culture. Characters often visit ramen shops as casual social spaces, and ramen scenes are used to show character development or emotional moments.

In school anime, ramen is a popular after-school meal. In slice-of-life anime, ramen shops serve as meeting places where characters develop relationships.
